 Vowels

 

What is a vowel?

A vowel is a sound made when the impedance of the air through the vocal tract is minimal and the vocal tract is completely open. The vowels are A, E, I, O, U

 

Ideas

 

 

Here you have some general ideas to teach vowels with your children:

  • Name as many things that begins with.... (use the vowel you are teaching or reviewing)

  • Say a word that rhymes with....(use the vowel you are teaching or reviewing)

  • Does ......(use the vowel you are teaching or reviewing)sound like ........?

  • Where is the sound.....(use the vowel you are teaching or reviewing)in this word?

  • List words that ends with ....(use the vowel you are teaching or reviewing)

  • Go on a .....(use the vowel you are teaching or reviewing)sound hunt .

  • Can you name an animal that begins/ ends with .....(use the vowel you are teaching or reviewing)?

  • Can you draw a fruit that begins / ends with ....(use the vowel you are teaching or reviewing)?

  • Play  "I spy a word that begins with...(use the vowel you are teaching or reviewing)"

  • Make riddles using the blend you want to introduce or practise.

  • Write silly sentences beginning with that vowel

 

  

 

Cooking:

Apple Smiles

Slice apples, with peel on, into 8 pieces. Spread each piece with peanut butter; add miniature marshmallows for teeth. Put two slices together.

Apple Song

Apples are fun to eat.
Apples are nice and sweet.
Apples are such a treat.
Apples are hard to beat!

Art:

Cut big A's from construction paper. Let children find "A" pictures in magazines. Cut pictures and paste on outline of A.

Game:

Pretend to be apples on a tree and "fall" off the tree and roll on the ground as an apple may roll on the ground.

Song:

Elephant chant

"Who is the animal baggy and gray,
That walks in the forest with a sway
And feeds himself with his nose?
The Elephant!"

Art:

Cut big E's from construction paper. Let children find "E" pictures in magazines. Cut pictures and paste on outline of E

Game:

Use egg cartons to toss beans into. Get the children to count how many beans they got into the cartons.

Game:

Pretend to be insects. Tell each other what insect they are imitating.

Math:

Make class graphs, recording favorite ice cream flavors.

Snacks:

Olives, oranges, oatmeal, orange juice, omelets, Oreos

Song:

Let's sing now for the letter o 
Let's sing some o words that we know
Olive, owl, and octopus too1 
Oh, letter o, we do like you!

Art:

Cut big O's from construction paper. Let children find "O" pictures in magazines. Cut pictures and paste on outline of O.

Math:

Do a graphing activity as to which children like or don't like olives, oreos or orange

Cut big U's from construction paper. Let children find "U" pictures in magazines. Cut pictures and paste on outline of U.
 

Game:
