Songs & Chants

Music is a manifestation of culture and of the human need to
communicate. Because it is inextricably associated with
language, using music in foreign language teaching is a good way
of promoting speaking and of encouraging students to create
mental fantasies.
Music has been used in classes in many ways and for different
reasons, particularly in Suggestopedia (Lozanov 1978) through
which music creates a relaxed learning environment for students.
Music stimulates images for the inner eye, even in students who
claim to have no imagination. Music promotes conversation
because listeners may interpret the same piece of music
differently. Music makes people act spontaneously, not only on a
dance floor but also in a classroom.

P Simple Rain Stick
Gather some empty potato chip cans with lids several plastic 6pack
can holders contact paper/construction paper popcorn or dried beans
masking tape or colored tape decorative materials; boot laces, raffia,
commercially purchased feather, beads, etc
Pour in a handful of popcorn or dried
beans, adjust amounts till you find the sounds you like. Seal lid to
can. Decorate them.
Shakers
Gather film canisters and fill one with rice and one with beans and
one with rocks anything will work. Then tape well with clear mailing
tape and put in Music Center. Young ones love because they fit so well
in their hands.
Save many plastic soft drink bottles. Have the children
paint the outsides of them with brightly colored paint. Fill each one
with a different size "rattle object" - beans, rice, pebbles, etc. Screw
the lids back on and you have great shaking instruments.
Triangle
Take clothes hangers and either leave them as
they are, or cut and make into small triangles. Tie a string on the top.
The triangle needs to be suspeded to make a nice sound. Use metal spoons
to tap on them.
Castanets
Use a sturdy piece of cardboard about 1 inch
wide 5 inches long. Fold cardboard in haf, glue large button on inside
of cardboard ends. Click together to make the sound!
Drums
Tack inner tube rubber around an oatmeal
box or a round ice cream container.
Drum Sticks
Gather two small rubber balls and
two small dowels. Cut the dowels to size. Stick each dowel through a
ball. Glue in place.
Rattles
Gather 16 oz plastic pop bottles with the
tops. Fill each pop bottle 1/2 way up with rice, beans, sand, etc. Secure
the screw top with glue.
Paper Cup Maracas
Put a few beans inside then
cover the end and secure

Tap your name
Pass out two rhythm sticks to
each child and sit in a circle. Next, have each child tap out their
own name.
Freeze Dance
Pick any kind of
music (the faster the better), have the kids dance to the music and
freeze when it stops. The positions are great that the kids end up
having.
Paper Plate Dancing
Give each child a paper plate. Play
different types of music and have the children keep the beat by:
Tapping the plate on their head
Tapping the plate on their tummy
Tapping the plate on their foot
Tapping the plate on their knee
Once the children are used to tapping the
paper plate on different body parts, ask them where they should tap
the plate next.
Make animals movements:
Walk like an elephant
Gallop like a zebra
Waddle like a penguin
Run like a cheetah
Slither like a snake
Jump like a kangaroo
