High frequency
words: Dolch words: Fry words
or Popping
words?
What are Sight Words?
These
are words that good readers should
instantly recognize without
having to "figure them out." From 50-75%
of all words used in school books,
library books, newspapers, and magazines
are in the Dolch Basic Sight Vocabulary
of 220 words The Dolch word list is made
up of "service words" (pronouns,
adjectives, adverbs, prepositions,
conjunctions, and verbs) which cannot be
learned through the use of pictures.
Dolch
words
They are also called Dolch words. The
famous Dolch Sight Word lists are named
after E.W. Dolch, who surveyed a great
quantity of children's books to compile
a list of the most commonly occuring
words in young children's readers. He
came up with a list of 220 "service
words" (primarily pronouns, adjectives,
adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions and
verbs) and 95 common nouns. It is
estimated that the combined listings
account for common words that occur in
50-75% of children's books.
What are Fry Words?
Dr. Edward B. Fry's Instant Word List (which is often
referred to as the Fry Words) are the most common words
in English ranked in order of frequency.
In 1996, Dr. Fry expanded on Dolch's sight word lists
and research and published a book titled "Fry 1000 Instant Words."
His research found that a mere 25 words make up approximately
1/3 of all items published. He discovered that 100 words
comprise approximately 1/2 of all the publications written, and
300 words make up 65% of all written material.
Here you have a list:

I decided to call them Popping words because
they "pop up" all the time in reading and writing. And everybody
likes popcorn. What can be better than eating popcorn
while learning the high frequency words.

How to teach the words
Select 10
new words each week to teach.
write the
words or print them onto hard cardboard
Show the
word to the child.
Say: This
is the word /XXXX/
Ask: What
letter is at the beginning of this word?
Point
out something characteristic about the
word for example
This word
begins with the same letter as your name;
or This word only has 3 letters, spell
the word aloud
Ask your
children to spell it aloud.
Have the
child practice the 10 sight words with a
hands-on activity like bingo,
concentration, Go Fish, etc. The game
should be played with a partner, a
friend, you it is
important that the words be seen in
context
or print like they will be seen when
reading.

Activities
Concentration game
Play concentration game using the words

New sentences
Provide the child with all or part
of the pile of flashcards
allow them to create their own sentences using the cards

Tic tac toe
Allow them to play tic tac toe,
either with colored chalk on the board or with colored pencils
on paper. you can also make tic tac toe games with manipulative
pieces. Before a children can place an "x" or an "o" on the grid,
he or she must spell a sight word correctly.

Pick up a card
Put all of the word cards face down
on the table and then just kind of shove them around on the
table top with my hands as I say "Pick a card, pick a card,
pick a card_________." and name a child. They have to reach in
a grab one of the rotating cards. If they can say the word they
keep the card if they can't we all read it and it goes back into
the pot.
